Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
In the Saigon area I was able to take private tours of everything I wanted to see. I was very fortunate in that I found a tour guide who knew the area, spoke decent English and wasn't interested in pawning me off to a tour group. He was content with escorting just me all over the area. I took me on a tour of the city where I saw all the major sites, the Reunification Palace (formerly the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Vietnam), the Remembrance Museum (formerly the War Crimes of the US and China Museum), and several other interesting sites. I also got a tour of the Cu Chi Tunnel Complex. The area was repeatedly bombed by US aircraft, but US and RVN forces were never able to subdue it, because the people lived in tunnels under the ground. This allowed them to escape the bombing. I also went to the Mekong Delta region. There I got to see how coconut candy was made, handle a snake and take boat tours of the small islands in the river channel.
