Apache Pass
Apache Pass, a small pass in the Chiricahua Mountains is probably the most famous of all Indian-US battles in Arizona. It occurred around the US Civil War timeframe and oddly enough occurs over a small spring of water. Typical of many US battles against the Indians, the US Soldiers prevailed because of their superior weaponry rather than the leadership and qualities of the troops. One of the ramifications of the battle was the founding of a series of posts in what is now southeast Arizona, the first being Fort Bowie, at Apache Pass. The only remaining operating post founded as a result of the Apache Wars is Fort Huachuca, the home of the US Army's Military Intelligence Corps. I visited Apache Pass in 1995 as a student at Fort Huachuca and again in 1998 as a company commander as I took my soldiers to the pass for a walk through Arizona History.
